Maine Coon Cat

Maine Coon cat is considered the only longhair belonging to the United States. This cat breed was introduced by seamen who sailed into New England

The cats they carried on their ships most likely left the ship either permanently or just for a little shore leave, bred with the existing native cats, and finally created a breed of their own.

The Maine Coon cat has a powerful muscular body and strong legs. The head has a squared-off muzzle and large ears held wide and tall. The coat is long and thick and consists of an undercoat covered by a large glossy, waterproof topcoat.

The hair on the head, neck, and shoulders is shorter and increases in length below the back, sides, and tail. There is a ruff, which is at the bottom of the ears and is heavier in males than females.

The tail hair of this cat is long and flowing. This cat breed has a variety of 30 or more colors.

Coat Length: Shorter on the shoulders and longer on the stomach, smooth, shaggy

Maine Coon Cat Lifespan: 9-13 yrs.

Maine Coon Cat Size: Male weighing from 12 to 15 pounds as compared to females weighing from 9 to 12 pounds.

Personality of Maine Coon Cats

These cats are sweet and are very playful and friendly. They enjoy human company and make good pets.

Because of their humble origin, they are most often found curled up in strange places. They enjoy outdoor life and so need a chance to climb and pretend hunting.

These cats are known for the delightful quiet chirping sound they make.

Feeding & Grooming

Feeding: Every cat is unique and each has its particular likes, dislikes, and needs when it comes to food.

Cats are carnivores and every cat must obtain 41 different nutrients from their food. Proper nutrients will vary depending on age and overall health, so an energetic kitten needs a different balance of nutrients in her diet than a less active senior cat.

Grooming: Common question about this cat is, do Maine coon cats shed? Because of its length, this cat breed deals with its coat quite well. However, it still needs frequent grooming to keep it in good condition.
