The Russian Blue cat was previously known as the Archangel Cat because it was said to have arrived in Europe aboard ships from the Russian port of that name Arkhangelsk.

It has also been known as the Spanish Cat and the Maltese Cat, particularly in the US where the last name continued until the beginning of the century.

However, strong proof linking the cat with Russia. Large numbers of cats with similar coat colors are found in Scandinavia and their dense coat are indicative of living in a northern climate.

 Although blue is considered the typical color of this breed, black and white Russians are known. These colors started during World War II when the few remaining Russian Blue cats were crossed with the British Blue and the Siamese to maintain numbers.

Description

Russian Blue cat is medium to large with an elegant, beautiful body and long, slim legs. The cats walk as if on tip-toes. The head is wedge-shaped with prominent whisker pads and large ears.

The vivid green eyes are set wide apart and are almond-shaped. The coat is double with a very dense undercoat and feels fine, short and soft.

The coat texture of this cats is very different from any other breed.  The most popular blue variety, the coat color is a clear even blue with a silvery sheen.

Coat Length: short and soft.

Age Expectancy:  15-20 years

Size: Male weighing from 10-12 pounds as compared to females weighing from 7-10 pounds.

Personality

Russian Blue cats are quiet and sensitive, sometimes shy and reserved but are said to be tremendously loyal to their chosen human being. They may take time to develop a friendship with humans.

Once settled in a loving environment they are super playful and energetic around and are extremely agile and light-footed.

They have high intelligence with excellent memory power, they also tend to remember their favorite visitors even if the visitors are not frequent.

Feeding & Grooming

Feeding: Every cat is unique and each has their particular likes, dislikes, and needs when it comes to food. 

Cats are carnivores and every cat must obtain 41 different nutrients from their food. Proper nutrients will vary depending on age and overall health, so energetic kitten needs a different balance of nutrients in her diet than a less active senior cat.

Grooming: Russian Blue cat does not require much grooming like other breeds. But to keep their coat healthy simply brushing with a soft brush.
